U-M Intramural Sports Building Renovation

Athletics|Higher Education

Originally constructed in 1928, the Intramural Sports Building is one of the nation’s first collegiate recreation facilities. Its 2016 renovation revitalized the historic structure while preserving much of its original architectural character. Designed by Integrated Design Solutions, the project reimagined the interior layout to accommodate modern fitness, wellness, and social spaces, expanding and reconfiguring workout areas, studios, and common zones to meet the evolving needs of the university community. SDI Structures provided structural engineering services that balanced preservation with modernization, helping extend the life of this campus landmark.

The renovation required creative solutions to adapt the existing load-bearing masonry structure to new functional and spatial requirements. SDI evaluated and reinforced existing framing to support updated floor loads and new fitness equipment, coordinated new openings within historic walls, and provided design support for envelope and roof repairs. The resulting facility honors the building’s legacy while delivering a safe, efficient, and structurally sound environment that serves students for generations to come.
