The University of Notre Dame’s Crossroads Project expanded the historic stadium by adding three major multi-story buildings—Duncan Student Center, Corbett Family Hall, and O’Neill Hall—each designed with its own independent structural system to protect the integrity of the original 1930s reinforced-concrete bowl. Using primarily steel framing with composite concrete decks, the new structures were detailed with expansion joints and bridging elements that allow them to align functionally with the stadium while remaining structurally separate. This strategy minimized load transfer to the existing bowl and ensured that new gravity and lateral demands were carried entirely by the additions.
Each new building incorporates structural solutions tailored to its program. Duncan Student Center uses long-span trusses and vibration-controlled floors for large recreation spaces; Corbett Family Hall employs composite steel frames to accommodate flexible academic and media facilities; and O’Neill Hall integrates acoustically isolated slabs and stiffened framing for performance and rehearsal spaces. Upgraded concourses and premium seating structures were added with minimal impact to the stadium using lightweight steel systems and carefully coordinated anchorage details. Together, these interventions modernized the stadium complex while exemplifying sensitive, technically rigorous integration of new construction with a historic structure.
