The Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building unites the School of Information and the Computer Science and Engineering Division within a single, collaborative hub on the University of Michigan’s North Campus. Designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners with Integrated Design Solutions, the five-story, 163,000-square-foot facility supports flexible teaching environments, advanced research laboratories, and interdisciplinary innovation. The project advances the university’s mission of academic excellence and carbon neutrality through thoughtful integration of high-performance systems and sustainable strategies. SDI Structures provided structural engineering services for this technically demanding facility, delivering an efficient framing system that supported both the architectural vision and the building’s heavy exterior veneer.
Key structural features include long-span plate girders spanning major auditorium spaces, which required careful coordination to balance vibration performance, ceiling heights, and the architect’s aesthetic intent. SDI collaborated closely with the design and construction teams to achieve open, adaptable spaces that accommodate specialized lab requirements and complex mechanical systems. The result is a durable, high-performing structure that reflects the University of Michigan’s forward-looking investment in technology, education, and research innovation.
