Oakland Center

Higher Education

As the structural engineer of record for the Oakland Center’s major transformation, SDI Structures played a pivotal role in renewing one of Oakland University’s most important student-life hubs. Working closely with Integrated Design Solutions and the construction team, SDI delivered engineered solutions that supported a 60,000-square-foot expansion while the center remained fully operational. The reimagined facility adds significant new program areas, including a large ballroom, modern conference rooms, lounges, and a tiered amphitheater study space—enhancing the building’s capacity to serve the growing campus community.

To meet the project’s architectural and functional goals, SDI designed structural systems that enabled open, light-filled spaces, improved circulation, and higher ceilings, all while achieving seamless integration with the existing building. The work required careful coordination to manage phased construction, maintain safety during continuous occupancy, and preserve a cohesive aesthetic across old and new structures. SDI’s engineering solutions helped create a durable, flexible, and inviting student center that serves as a vibrant heart of campus life.
